The 2023 NSAA State Track and Field Championships brought out the best athletes from each corner of the state for four big days of track and field action. Among them were plenty of local athletes who impressed along the way as they stood out from the background of quality competition. Left to right from top left: Reagan Fousek impressed in her first state meet and the freshman is sure to accomplish big things in upcoming seasons. Elaina McHargue made a return trip to the state meet where her outstanding athletic career came to an end. Hallie Rutherford competed in the long jump and triple jump in her return to Omaha and will look for another big year next year. Truman Ryan certainly impressed in his first trip to state and will be looking for a return trip next year. Gage Friesen continued a great year adding state track qualifier to his list of accomplishments along with state wrestling.

Historic Kernels season comes to an end

On Tuesday night the unthinkable happened for the Central City/ Fullerton/Centura Kernels. With a 7-2 lead the team needed just two outs to keep their season alive in an elimination game at the NSAA State Baseball Championships against Wayne. The Blue Devils mounted a comeback and on a suicide squeeze bunt they took an 8-7 lead over the Kernels. Three quick outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and the 2023 Kernels baseball season was now just ink on the pages of the history books as they were defeated.

Good Luck at State

This week will be a busy one for multiple local athletes at the state level. The Nebraska Christian girls track team (top left) will be well represented and will be a contender for a team championship Friday and Saturday at Omaha Burke for state track and field. The boys team (top right) will also be well represented as they take the track. High Plains Community (bottom left) will have seven athletes in action on Friday and Saturday as in total 35 area athletes will take part in the 2023 NSAA State Track and Field Championships. At the state golf meet next Tuesday and Wednesday it will be Ayden Zikmund for the Bison as he finished sixth and the team placed fifth at their district meet on Tuesday.

Noakes throws a gem while Kernels bats stifle Kneifl

Saturday night the Central City/Fullerton/Centura Kernels recorded an emphatic 7-1 victory over Wayne Blue Devils Varsity on Sunday, dominating the match with a spectacular five-run haul in the third inning. This impressive win unfolded at Omaha's iconic Tal Anderson Field, where the Kernels made their mark.

The Kernels first stepped up to the plate in the second inning when Nolan Hurt singled on a 2-1 count, driving in the first run of the game. This run set the tone for what was to come in the decisive third inning.

Kernels clinch state birth with C-3 Championship

Four years ago, the Central City/Fullerton/Centura Kernels looked to be a team on the rise as the goal for the season was to make it the NSAA State Baseball Championships for the first time in program history. The team looked to find success that had not been seen in Central City for decades dating back to a successful run that ended when the baseball program came to an end at Central City High School.

Bison track sends multiple athletes to state meet

The Central City track and field team took the B-5 District meet by storm on Tuesday afternoon once the storms passed through and the action got underway after a weather delay. With standout performances from both the men’s and women’s teams, several Bison athletes were able to punch their ticket to the NSAA State Track and Field Championships at Omaha Burke next Wednesday and Thursday.
