The Central City High School volleyball team showcased their determination last week, rebounding from an opening round defeat to seize a notable fifth-place finish in the Lou-Platte Conference Tournament. The achievement is a testament to their resilience and commitment, as they faced and conquered formidable opponents.

Kicking off their comeback, Central City locked horns with Ravenna, registering dominant victories with set scores of 25-13 and 25-19. Makayla Enevoldsen was a standout, delivering 6 kills, while Adrianna Westman, Hope Paup, and Sydni Homolka each made significant contributions. Homolka, in particular, displayed her versatility with 5 kills and an impressive 13 digs. Orchestrating the offense was Brookly Richardson, who provided 24 assists while also contributing defensively with 7 digs.

Building on their momentum, the Bison then squared off against Ord. The matchup was intensely contested, but Central City emerged victorious with scores of 25-22 and 25-23. Homolka continued to shine with 10 kills, while Enevoldsen and Richardson were pivotal in the team's success. Defensive stalwarts like Addie Buhlke, Faith Campa, and Aubrey Garfield ensured the Bison stayed on top.

Reflecting on the team's performance, Head Coach Heather Negus expressed, "Last week was a great win for our program. Beating Ord for a 5th place finish speaks volumes about our team's grit and determination." She further emphasized the senior class's role, adding, "The senior class has worked hard to reach this point, so I was happy for them as well as their teammates to accomplish this goal! Addie has been solid at the libero position this season and her defense, along with Faith, Adrianna, and Sydni playing strong in the back court really keep us in tough matches.  Makayla and Brookly played their best matches this season in that match, which really provided a spark for our team."

The narrative now turns toward an intriguing Thursday matchup in Milford. This game promises more than just competition; it's a reunion of sorts. The Bison will face Shelby-Rising City, led by Central City High School graduate Abby (Schoch) Kuhn and also will face a Milford squad led by Emily (Maresh) Restau.

Coach Restau voiced her anticipation, "Thursday is going to be a fun atmosphere just the mere fact that we are all Central City Alumni. I am extremely thankful for the education I received at Central City and the coaches who helped shape me as an athlete and inspired me to be a coach." She also added, "Central City has seen great improvements and has had some younger girls really step up - I am happy to see success coming their way. Shelby-Rising City has some very quality wins under their belt and has been competitive in a lot of matches this year. This will be another fun night of coaching volleyball."

The emotional weight of the matchup isn't lost on Restau, who delved deeper into her personal connection with her cousin Heather (Schuller) Negus and the sport. "It's more than just the match we will play, we are getting this opportunity to coach against each other because someone introduced volleyball to me, helped me grow a love for the sport, and through her coaching inspired me to become a coach. Growing up we were always on the same side, cheering for the same team and had the same goals - so being on opposite sides - I am not sure you can say it is fun, but the story of how I am where I am today means more."

She also acknowledged the influence of her family and the profound impact of Negus on her life. “Heather was one of two idols for me growing up, Ashley Solt being the other. I know volleyball would not mean what it does to me if it wasn't for her and honestly, I might have even played softball in high school. Mel and Jim (Schuller) helped me with this as well by letting me tag along to some of Heather's college volleyball matches. The passion and commitment she had as a player and coach inspired me to follow in her footsteps and play college volleyball as well as coach high school volleyball. Having her as a coach was a great addition to the story. She coached me hard, but I knew that she saw more in me and committed herself to try to help me reach my potential and goals. This is now part of my coaching philosophy. Overall, it is going to be a pretty special moment that I am glad we are getting the opportunity to be part of.”

Central City's Coach Heather Negus reciprocated the sentiment, stating, "We have tried to schedule a match with Milford since I came back to head coaching. This season was the first time it worked out. Emily played through high school with me on the coaching staff. She knows how I coach, and how I teach the game. Her passion for athletics is a great asset to Milford Public Schools - I ask her all the time when she is coming back home! - I am not going to lie, it will be stressful to coach against her and I'm sure I'll have butterflies all day long.”

But beyond these heartfelt matchups, the Bison are focused on concluding their regular season on a triumphant note. Currently, they boast a commendable 14-13 record and are eager to build on this. They are searching for their first season over the .500 mark since the 2008 season, ironically when Emily Maresh was a senior. Their next big challenge will be the C1-8 sub-district, scheduled for October 23 and 24. While the brackets are still under wraps, Central City will be facing adversaries like Adams Central, Aurora, Grand Island Central Catholic, and St. Paul.

With a season characterized by tenacity, legacy, and deep-rooted connections, Central City's volleyball team embodies the spirit of the game, and their journey promises more captivating chapters ahead.
