The High Plains Community sports season got off to a mixed start this week. The Lady Storm volleyball team clinched a big 3-1 victory over Nebraska Lutheran on Monday night, but the High Plains football team suffered a heavy 32-0 defeat to a larger and more experienced BDS squad on Friday night.

The air in the Central City area is thick with anticipation as the 2023-24 school year unfolds. Athletes, seasoned and emerging alike, from across the region are primed to leave their mark on the fall sports season.

Each year as the school year goes along, we find ourselves putting together a short list of deserving candidates for our annual Male Athlete of the Year. This year was certainly a difficult one as all three schools in our coverage area produced outstanding athletes. As the year went along, we knew that we would have a tough decision on our hands. In the end there could only be one winner and in the end, that honor goes to a kid who was the ultimate underdog early in his athletic career.

Nebraska Christian’s outstanding multi-sport athlete, Reghan Flynn, has been named the 2023 Republican-Nonpareil Female Athlete of the Year. Flynn, a key player in volleyball, basketball, and track for the Lady Eagles, played a pivotal role in driving her teams to the state tournament, a feat she describes as “a big honor.”
