When it comes to marriage, I am a baby in this area, my husband and I have only been married for 5 years. My mom and dad are going on 28 years, my Aunt Kande and Uncle Tom were married for 43 years, and my grandparents Clayton (Speed) and Edie Erickson were married for 69 years, lengths of time that seem unimaginable to survive after the loss of your spouse. After being with that person sometimes more than half your life what do you do after you say goodbye to your best friend, how do you navigate and what does life look like in the world of being a widow or a widower?

Building Business Partnerships: Central City High School hosts open house for Career Pathways

On Tuesday, June 18, Central City High School held an open house event titled “Building Business Partnerships for Merrick County’s Future Workforce,” aimed at fostering relationships between local businesses and the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The event, which took place in the high school commons from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., showcased the school’s extensive career pathways designed to equip students with the skills needed for the local and state workforce.

Operation Shine Camp shines bright once more

The Kids and Dreams Foundation put on one of their annual weekend Operation Shine camps at Covenant Cedars Camp located just outside Central City over the weekend of June 7 through 9. Operation shine camps are specifically tailored to children ages 7-12 experiencing Autism Spectrum Disorder and related conditions. The days include arts and crafts, swimming, fishing, archery, crate skating, sensory activities, and so much more!

American Legion Post #6 hosts successful 13th Annual Ribfest

The Central City American Legion held their 13th annual Ribfest on this past Saturday, with 8 cooks competing for 1st place and the people’s choice award. The weather was warm but there were enough clouds to provide a little shade from the sun from time to time. Already when you are walking from the parking lot to the front gate, the smell of ribs is hanging in the air.

Local law enforcement leaders honored with Patriot Award during Council meeting

The City Council held their monthly meeting on June 10th at 7 p.m. The meeting was called to order in traditional fashion by Mayor Tim Bolling and started off by opening the floor to Officer Dickhaut of the Central City Police Department. Officer Dickhaut serves in the National Guard and has been serving as an emergency management supervisor for the Air National Guard. Officer Dickhaut nominated Chief Mark Dreher and Sergeant Todd Church for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award, to which both Officer Church and Chief Dreher were selected and awarded the Patriot Award. The Office of the Secretary of Defense awards these to individual employment supervisors for “Contributing to National Security and Protecting Liberty and Freedom by Supporting Employee Participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve Forces.”
