Operation Shine Camp shines bright once more

The Kids and Dreams Foundation put on one of their annual weekend Operation Shine camps at Covenant Cedars Camp located just outside Central City over the weekend of June 7 through 9. Operation shine camps are specifically tailored to children ages 7-12 experiencing Autism Spectrum Disorder and related conditions. The days include arts and crafts, swimming, fishing, archery, crate skating, sensory activities, and so much more!

International Quilt Museum holds “Best in Show” Quilt Showcase

The first Nebraska State Fair was held in 1859, while Nebraska was still a U.S. territory. The annual event became known officially as the Nebraska State Fair in 1869, after Nebraska was granted statehood in 1867. The first quilt competition at the fair is recorded in 1909. The competitions have continued since that time, with awards presented in a variety of categories.

Local entrepreneurs collaborate with CCC representatives at Central City Public Library

On Tuesday morning, a group of local entrepreneurs gathered at the Central City Public Library to engage in a collaborative session with Kelli Faltys and Aimee Steinhardt-Duysen, the Entrepreneurship Center Coordinators from Central Community College (CCC) in Columbus and Grand Island, respectively.

Central City’s 16th Annual Fly-in Breakfast offered plenty of sights, sounds and hotcakes for all. Central City’s David Enevoldsen boosts six-year-old son Dillon so he can see in the cockpit of a small plane at the event.

Northern plains farm labor

In the Northern Plains Region (Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota) there were 37,000 workers hired directly by farm operators on farms and ranches during the week of April 7-13, 2024, unchanged from the April 2023 reference week, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Workers numbered 30,000 during the week of January 7-13, 2024, down 9% from the January 2023 reference week.

USDA now accepting applications for available funds to help cover organic certification costs

Through the Organic Certification Cost Share Program (OCCSP), USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) will cover up to 75% of organic certification costs at a maximum of $750 per certification category. FSA is now accepting applications, and organic producers and handlers should apply for OCCSP by the Oct. 31, 2024, deadline for eligible expenses incurred from Oct. 1, 2023, to Sept. 30, 2024. FSA will issue payments as applications are received and approved.

Nebraska Wesleyan University Spring 2024 Dean’s List

Nebraska Wesleyan University has announced its 2024 spring semester academic honors list for students enrolled in traditional and adult undergraduate programs. Traditional undergraduates Students earning at least a 3.75 grade point average (on a 4.00 scale) while completing a full-time course load of at least 12 credit hours of graded work (pass/ fail courses are not included) are eligible.
