Central City’s size and defensive pressure was too much for St. Paul to handle last Tuesday as the Bison used a hot start to run away with a convincing 63-25 win.

After eight minutes of play in last Thursday’s game between High Plains Community and Nebraska Lutheran, the Storm were left searching for answers as the Knights built a quick and commanding 18-2 lead.

Forty-four Class B teams and nearly 700 total wrestlers made the trip to the Columbus Fieldhouse for last Thursday’s annual Norm Manstedt Invitational hosted by High Plains Community Schools. Among that crowded field of competitors, a pair of Storm wrestlers left their marks and made some history in the process.

In a battle of undefeated, state-rated, state tournament-hopeful teams, the Central City Bison suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday when they fell to Malcolm at the Nebraska Girls Basketball Showcase in Kearney, 47-38.

The Central City Bison were hoping to hit the throttle in the new year, and the advantage provided to the Green and Gold on their home mats on Saturday was a key part in aiding the team in accomplishing that goal.

The Bison just couldn’t find the bottom of the net in last Friday’s road battle with Arcadia/Loup City, shooting twenty- one percent from the field and falling to the Rebels 58-28. Alongside the Green and Gold’s shooting woes, the Bison coughed up twenty- five turnovers to Arcadia/Loup City’s six.

After suffering an overtime loss to Shelby- Rising City three days prior, the High Plains Storm got back on track last Tuesday with a 49-37 victory over Riverside. The Storm jumped out to an 11-4 lead after one quarter of play, then survived a Charger rally in the second to bring a 25-20 advantage into the halftime intermission.

Three members of the Central City High School girls’ wrestling team exited the Columbus Community Fieldhouse with hardware last Thursday night, helping the Bison to a strong finish at the Norm Manstedt Girls Wrestling Invitational.

Up against a stacked field of wrestlers at last week’s Burwell Invite, the Nebraska Christian Eagles soared to impressive results, with Cal Siep headlining the effort with a bronze medal at 215 pounds.
