Central City tops Eagles, falls to Cougars in tournament

Offense was difficult to come by in the early goings of Monday’s game between Central City and Nebraska Christian in the second round of the Runza Holiday Tournament. Seven quick points from Central City’s Karter Negus gave the Bison a 7-3 advantage, then a transition basket at the buzzer from Jaic Rathbone brought the tally to 9-3 going into the second frame.

Lady Bison win Runza Holiday Tournament

In the championship round of the Runza Holiday Tournament in Central City, the hosting Bison unwrapped the first place trophy after notching a 54-35 win over Cross County. Prior to the tournament’s final, the Bison met up with cross town rival Nebraska Christian in the semifinal round and used some stingy defense and an early surge to come away with a 63-25 victory.

After a week away from the hardwood during the holiday break, High Plains Head Coach Megan Bruce wasn’t sure what to expect when the Storm took the court against Elba last Monday night. What the head coach saw play out in Howard County was a group of girls hungry for their fourth win of the season.

On Friday before the holiday break, the Central City girls competed at the Tekamah-Herman Invite while the boys’ team battled at Logan View’s Dan Mowinkel Invite. Three Lady Bison secured their spots on the top of the medal stand, including Sawyer Groetzinger, Addison Burbach, and Maci Peters.

Central City boys can’t keep pace with Cardinals

Twenty-six points were scored in the first four and a half minutes of last Friday’s game between Central City and Doniphan-Trumbull, and all of them went to the Cardinals. Doniphan-Trumbull was red hot early on, going on to pour in thirty-five points in the opening period and running away with a 85-27 victory on the Bison’s home court.
