Hello to you all, Ryan Dettman here coming to you from our nation’s capital. You may notice this week’s newspaper is a little slim, especially on the nonexistent sports page. There is good reason for that and it stems from me being on a much needed “assignment” covering the eighth grade field trip to Washington DC.

Following college and a year of full time work at KOLN-TV, I joined the Air Force and received my commission as a lieutenant in Officer’s Training School in San Antonio, Texas. One of the very first things we learned in leadership training was how not to lead. Good leaders, we were taught do NOT use fear, intimidation or ridicule! In his book “How to Win Friends and Infl uence People” Dale Carnegie said the way NOT to win influence is to criticize, condemn and complain.

It was former British Prime Minister Tony Blair who said, “Every decision you make, divides!” Two pieces of legislation considered by Nebraska Legislature this year illustrate that truth – LB626 (the Heartbeat Bill) restricting abortion and the equally divisive LB574, known as the “Let Them Grow Act” which prohibits gender altering surgery and hormone blockers for children under the age of 19.

In the wake of the heartbreaking defeat of LB626, better known as the Heartbeat Bill, I want to express my thanks for the letters, emails and messages of support for the bill I have received from constituents. As suggested by the name, this bill would have restricted abortions once a heartbeat was detected in the unborn baby. The bill fell one vote short of receiving a cloture vote which would have allowed the bill to receive an up or down vote.
