The American Legion hosts annual Memorial Day Ceremony Monday

On May 29, Memorial Day, people gathered at the Northeast corner of the Central City cemetery for a special ceremony put on by the local American legion. At 10 A.M. that morning, everyone gathered around the civil war memorial statue to watch as the American Legion Post 6 had the special Memorial Day Service. A tradition that goes back to long before any of the current members in the legion now.

Hometown Hero: Celebrating Master Sergeant Robert Fothergill’s Esteemed Career in the Marine Corps

Every town has its heroes, but few are as versatile, tenacious, or well-traveled as Central City’s very own Master Sergeant Robert Fothergill. After 22 years of service, this hometown hero officially retired from the United States Marine Corps on April 30th, 2023, leaving behind an indelible legacy.

Tuesday marked the end of the 2022-23 school year at Central City Public Schools and the high school leadership class had plenty of fun planned. Brianna Mundorf and Karlee Seitz (top photo, left to right) turned some laps on the track in National Guard pedal go-karts as did Jacob Kucera and Garrett Schmierer (bottom photo). The day also presented an opportunity to play cornhole, spikeball and many other fun activities on the football field before school was dismissed for the summer.

Local 4-Hers turned out in large numbers as two local clubs joined forces to give the Janovec playground equipment a face lift. Youngsters like Leo Brandes gave the equipment a fresh coat of paint while others worked on larger projects like adding mulch to the playground surface and other repairs. Senior Nathan Carlson delivered the goods in the hurdles, winning the 300-meter intermediates and finishing second to Seward’s Andrew Pearson in the 110-meter highs. The girls 3200 meter relay team of Katie Kuck, Andrea Schwarz, Mercy Dinwiddie and Kay Broekemeier won the Class B championship by nearly seven seconds over Lexington at the state meet.

Nebraska Farm Bureau awards Student Project Grant to local FFA/4-H student

From horticulture and dog breeding to show pigs and chickens, the passion of the winners of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Student Project Grants shine through in each of their projects. Nebraska Farm Bureau Student Project Grants, supported by the Charles Marshall Fund at the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation, were awarded to eight deserving student Farm Bureau members in Antelope, Lancaster, Saunders, Hall, Fillmore, Saline, and Merrick counties.
