Clarks VFW performs Memorial Day ceremony at local cemeteries

We received sunny weather for Memorial Day this year with a nice cool breeze. The cemeteries all around Nebraska have been adorned with flowers, and the gravestones of fallen veterans have been marked with American Flags. As many families come out to visit the gravestones of their family members in the military who have passed, the VFW color guard out of Clarks has been going to the Bureau and Clarks Cemetery to perform their yearly Memorial Day Service.

Farmers of Merrick County - Richard Brown

Richard started farming in 1972. Prior to this, though, he was no stranger to farming. Richard’s father, also called Richard, was a farmer so he grew up on a farm. The first field Richard planted? It was 30 acres of dry land soybeans in 1966 during high school for an FFA project. And at that point in his life, Richard wasn’t too sure about farming. You see when he graduated high school he had no desire to farm, had all sorts of interests: geology, history and he wanted to be a teacher. However, Richard got as far as student teaching and decided it wasn’t for him. “I was tired of the concrete and the politics, so I came back and started farming.”

NRCA Tour Nebraska to conclude at local Strobel Fabrication

The 31st annual Nebraska Rod and Custom Association (NRCA) 500-mile Tour Nebraska driving event is set to bring a significant influx of visitors to Central City as it concludes at Strobel Fabrication on Sunday, June 2nd. This year’s event, scheduled for June 1st and 2nd, promises to draw considerable local interest and participation, showcasing over 450 classic, antique, and special interest vehicles.

10 Years Ago Merrick County Sheriff’s Investigator John Abold led a team of three officers, including Sheriff Kevin Campbell and deputy Paul Byers, into an empty Chapman School classroom as part of a simulated live shooter drill. The Sheriff’s office used such scenarios to prepare for the eventuality of a dangerous and hostile intruder situation.

Nebraska Farm Bureau awards student project grants to 4-H and FFA students across the state

From show pigs and cattle, to gardening and beekeeping, the passion of the winners of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Student Project Grants shines through in each of their projects. Nebraska Farm Bureau Student Project Grants, supported by the Charles Marshall Fund at the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation, were awarded to nine deserving student Farm Bureau members from across the state.
