Since suffering their first loss of the season two weeks ago, the Central City/Centura Kernels have been on a tear. Following back-toback road wins over Holdrege and St.
Turkey hunters will take to the woods for Nebraska’s spring shotgun season April 18. They can expect a season consistent with the past five years, according to Carlie Gizel, wild turkey program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
Central City/Centura endured its first setback of the season last Tuesday but wasted little time bouncing back, falling 11-4 to Hastings at home before rallying for an 8-7 road victory over Holdrege just three days later.
Central City shined on their home track for last Tuesday’s Merrick County Invite, racking up forty-six total medals and twelve first place finishes. The Bison swept the 100-meter dash with Wyatt Dent earning the gold medal in the boys’ competition with a time of 11.70 seconds, and Tatum Campa taking the top spot on the girls’ side in 13.28.
Nebraska Christian turned in an impressive team performance at last Tuesday’s Merrick County Track and Field Invitational, racking up forty-eight total medals and eleven first place finishes. On the boys’ side of the meet, Titus Birnie and Luke Powell were golden in the middle distances.
The High Plains Storm came away from last week’s Merrick County Invite with some standout results, including a gold medal for senior Brodey Spurling. Spurling went up against twenty-nine of the best triple jumpers in the area and put together a dominant performance, winning with a best leap of 42-08.
It was a heavyweight battle last Saturday at West Point-Beemer High School. Top-rated Central City/Centura traveled eighty-five miles northwest for a showdown with second-rated Guardian Angels Central Catholic/ West Point-Beemer (GACC/WPB) and, while facing their first true adversity of the season, used an early surge and some standout pitching to come away with a 6-4 victory.
After one game, Central City/Centura looks the part of a team ready for a return trip to the state championships. In Friday’s regular season opener with Raymond Central, the Kernels used eleven hits and a pair of dominant pitching performances to coast past the Mustangs 13-1 at Kernel Field.
The City of Central City shined bright at last Friday’s Concordia University Indoor Track and Field Invitational as Central City High School swept the boys’ and girls’ team competitions in the Forest Division and Nebraska Christian dominated both competitions in the Prairie Division.
The High Plains Storm impressed in the opening track and field meet of the season last Thursday, the UNK Indoor Invite in Kearney. While going up against twenty-six other Class D teams, the High Plains boys secured four total medals, including a gold medal by Brodey Spurling, while the Lady Storm grabbed five top-six finishes.
