10 YEARS AGO Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City participated in an innovative twenty-three county regional pandemic influenza exercise developed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). A multi-grade level group of Nebraska Christian students spent a good share of their Tuesday morning and afternoon preparing and then delivering meals to the officers and staff of the Central City Police Department.

MIDLAND AREA AGENCY ON AGING and the Central City Senior Center—The Good Life Center—want to Thank their forty-plus volunteers that help the center run smoothly. It takes a village to put out 14,000 meals a year, answer numerous calls, keep the facility clean, and keep the sidewalks cleared and safe.

AREA GROUPS PREP FOR GO BIG GIVE

The thirteenth annual Go Big Give event, bringing Hall, Hamilton, Howard, and Merrick counties together in a twenty-four-hour day of giving, will be held next Thursday, May 7th. Put on by the Greater Grand Island Community Foundation and Heartland United Way, Go Big Give allows participating area nonprofits to raise money and awareness over a twenty-four-hour day of giving, as well as during the pre-give period preceding the event, which will be underway until May 6th.

PlantNebraska guides grant impact across state

A federal grant is helping Nebraska communities reimagine how trees can strengthen infrastructure, aesthetics, local economies and resilience. PlantNebraska, a statewide nonprofit, is partnering with the University of Nebraska– Lincoln to manage a ten-million-dollar grant from the United States Forest Service, part of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Nonpareil honored for excellence

The Central City Republican- Nonpareil won multiple awards at the Nebraska Press Association’s 153rd Annual Convention. On Saturday, April 18th, during the final banquet of the threeday convention held at the Cornhusker Marriot in downtown Lincoln, the Republican-Nonpareil won five awards— four of which were first place awards—during the association’s Better Newspaper Contest.

Historical museum cuts ribbon on new building on Saturday The Merrick County Historical Museum officially began a new chapter last week, as the museum held the grand opening for its new facility in Central City. On Saturday morning, a large crowd of museum patrons, community members, and state and local dignitaries and elected leaders gathered to officially cut the ribbon on the new facility.
