The Merrick County Spelling Bee took place on February 15, 2023 in Central City at the Performing Arts Center - Edwin and Bernice Lock Theater. The 5th and 6th grades contest in the morning and the 7th and 8th grades contest in the afternoon both began with twelve contestants representing Central City Middle School, Nebraska Christian, and Palmer Public School. After a written contest of five rounds with ten words each, eight spellers and seven spellers, respectively, moved onto the oral round. In both contests, each school was represented. Those students who make it to the oral round are rewarded with a semi-finalist ribbon and the top two spellers earn trophies.

As the 2023 crop production season begins, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to determine their plans for the upcoming growing season.

The number of farms and ranches in the state, at 44,300, was down 500 farms from 2021. Numbers of farms and ranches in Nebraska with less than $100,000 in agricultural sales decreased 500 farms from a year earlier while operations with agricultural sales of $100,000 or more was unchanged.
