An annual tradition, the Merrick County Spelling Bee was held last Wednesday with plenty of great spelling to be found. Students from Central City Middle School, Nebraska Christian and Palmer all gave it their best shot with Palmer’s Eryn Gregoski finishing runner-up in the 7th and 8th while Camila Renteria Guzman was crowned the champion. For the 5th and 6th grade competition it was Owen Shotkoski, of Palmer who took home the top honors while Lily Francl of Nebraska Christian was named the runner-up after spelling “sluggard” correctly to earn the spot.

Annual Merrick County Spelling Bee crowns champions last Wednesday

The Merrick County Spelling Bee took place on February 15, 2023 in Central City at the Performing Arts Center - Edwin and Bernice Lock Theater. The 5th and 6th grades contest in the morning and the 7th and 8th grades contest in the afternoon both began with twelve contestants representing Central City Middle School, Nebraska Christian, and Palmer Public School. After a written contest of five rounds with ten words each, eight spellers and seven spellers, respectively, moved onto the oral round. In both contests, each school was represented. Those students who make it to the oral round are rewarded with a semi-finalist ribbon and the top two spellers earn trophies.

Nebraska Farm numbers lower

Nebraska’s number of farms and ranches declined during 2022, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The number of farms and ranches in the state, at 44,300, was down 500 farms from 2021. Numbers of farms and ranches in Nebraska with less than $100,000 in agricultural sales decreased 500 farms from a year earlier while operations with agricultural sales of $100,000 or more was unchanged.

2023 All-America Selection Vegetable Winners Aside from this year’s four national flower winners, All-America Selections (AAS) has chosen three vegetable award winners – two national winners and one heartland regional winner. National awards are given to plants with consistently great performance across the United States.

Central City Comprehensive Plan Update: Community Survey Is Available

Community wide survey is available online at centralcity2033.com or in paper copy format at the City Offices, Library and Senior Center. Central City residents are being asked to provide their input through a community wide survey that is available online until February 29 while hard copies of the survey can be picked up at the City Offices, Senior Center, or Library and can be mailed directly no later than February 28 to FIVE RULE Rural Planning, 2123 Central Avenue, Suite D, Kearney, NE 68847 or dropped off at the city office also no later than February 28.

Justin Erickson displays local BBQ roots feeding the masses at Super Bowl 57

On Superbowl Sunday, as everyone was getting ready to watch the big game, Central City Alumni Justin Erickson was hard at work in the Pork on a Fork food truck serving the many people who arrived at the stadium itself in Phoenix Arizona. Erickson is now a longtime resident of Phoenix Arizona who has gone on to create a highly successful BBQ business that has seen continued success and growth since starting in 2011.
