Senator Loren Lippincott • District 34 Frustrations ran high recently in our nine-member Legislative Appropriations Committee as we struggled to find ways to cut the state budget. The volume of voices began to rise until one of our members spoke up with the rhetorical question we all ought to be asking as we consider the spending of tax dollars: “What is the purpose of government?” Over ninety percent of the bills we pass each year have a fiscal impact (in other words, they require the use of taxpayer dollars), which should cause everyone to ask, “How are you using the money you take out of my pocketbook and who or what is getting it?” Let’s look at the federal government’s handling of your money in past decades and see the success (or lack thereof) of its stewardship of your resources.

4-H embryology cracks fifty years

This year marks fifty years of Nebraska Extension’s Embryology program in Lancaster County, providing two generations of students the experience of hatching baby chicks in their classrooms. Embryology—the study of embryo development— is taught in every third-grade classroom in Lincoln Public Schools, Malcolm, Norris, and Waverly, as well as many parochial schools and home schools.

10 YEARS AGO It might not have been the way they’d have liked to do it, but the High Plains Community Storm will be back in Lincoln this weekend to defend its Class D-1 state championship. NC fifth-grader Marlie Mundt, who made a Quilt of Valor along with her great aunt Anita Wochner, was included in a documentary “Quilts of Valor II” which aired on Nebraska’s NET TV in March.

THEATER TO CLOSE

The Fox Theater in Central City will close permanently on April 16th, ending four years of movie screenings in the community. Last Thursday, Stuart Fox, of Watch the Fox, LLC, said that the decision was driven by declining attendance locally, which, coupled with rising operating costs, made continued operations financially unsustainable.
