10 YEARS AGO While searching for a long-term solution to an immediate facilities issue, the Central City Public Schools administration and Board of Education has opted to pursue the acquisition and installment of field turf for the next generation of Bison athletes at Central City High School. Members of Merrick Foundation’s Leading Locally class stopped for a photo with Nebraska governor Pete Ricketts on their February 10th visit to the state capitol.

A KWIK 20 YEARS

O’Neills have owned convenience stores for two decades Kwik Stop, a series of gas stations operating throughout the Cornhusker State, officially turns fifty this year, its articles of incorporation having been filed in spring of 1976. The store, which began with a single location in North Platte two years prior, in 1974, now encompasses twenty-seven locations, with a twenty-eighth under construction.

GRANTS A BOON TO CENTRAL CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Central City Police Department recently recognized Officers Dwayne Harvill and Reiny Dickhaut for their outstanding initiative and commitment to improving officer safety and operational effectiveness throughout 2025. Through their diligent efforts, Officers Harvill and Dickhaut successfully researched, wrote, and secured three separate grants totaling $26,918.54 for the department.

Since at least the 1400s when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote his poem, “The Parliament of Fowls,” we have recognized and celebrated the zest of romance in the air during early springtime.

10 YEARS AGO Longtime Merrick County Christmas of Sharing volunteer/coordinator Helen Foulk received the R-N Person of the Year Award plaque from publisher Bob Jensen at the Chamber of Commerce Gala Saturday. The Student of the Month is Central City Public School’s and the community’s way of acknowledging and recognizing students who exhibit positive morals, demonstrate the Bison Core Values, and are all-around outstanding students.
