The 51st annual Roger Nielsen Cross Country Invite is set to unfold today at Valley View Country Club, and fans from across Central Nebraska will be treated to some of the finest high school running talent in the state. Both the Central City Bison and Nebraska Christian Eagles are primed to make an impact in this prestigious event, joined by a strong lineup of teams from across the region, including Aurora, Grand Island Central Catholic, and Northwest. The invite promises an exciting day of competition on a challenging course.

However, it was the visiting Palmer Tigers who ultimately spoiled the Eagles’ celebration, coming away with a hard-fought 26-20 victory. The loss drops Nebraska Christian to 1-2 on the season as they now brace for a tough matchup against undefeated Howells-Dodge this coming Friday.

Despite the best efforts of key players, the Storm couldn’t weather the relentless attack of Riverside, who pulled away after an evenly matched first half. Now sitting at 2-1, High Plains looks to bounce back as they prepare for a road matchup against the winless Nebraska Lutheran Knights this Friday.

In what can only be described as a battle of wills, the High Plains Storm emerged victorious in a five-set showdown against the Nebraska Christian Eagles last Thursday night in Polk. The non-conference matchup had all the makings of a classic as both teams traded set wins before High Plains sealed the deal in a 3-2 victory. The final scores were 25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 18-25, and 15-13, with each point fought for and every rally hard-earned.

The Central City Bison volleyball team has made one thing abundantly clear this season: they know how to fight. Last Thursday night, the Bison squared off against Cross County in what turned out to be an epic five-set battle inside a packed Dome. In a match that had the crowd on the edge of their seats for every point, the Bison emerged victorious, pulling out a thrilling 3-2 win that featured record-breaking performances and heart-stopping drama. Final score: 25-13, 20-25, 27-25, 24-26, 17-15.

We wish we had more space to tell you more, but it was a great week for Bison softball as the squad won three of their four games, only losing to a top ranked St. Cecilia team. Tuesday night it was a 9-3 victory in Central City where Emma Steinke (L) and Journi Schindler (R) both stood out as they have for much of this season. It is a team effort with more freshmen seeing the field than there are seniors on the team.

If you were in the stands Friday night, you might still be recovering from what was one of the wildest, most dramatic football games Central City has seen in years. In a clash that had more twists and turns than a rollercoaster, the Bison came within inches of victory, only to see it slip away in a heart-stopping 56-55 double-overtime loss to Cozad.
