Bill Bolte steps down as president but continues with passion for history

The Merrick County Historical Society has played a pivotal role in uncovering and showcasing the history of Merrick County and its environs, spanning from the early 20th century back to the 1600s. Since attending his first meeting in 1998, Bill Bolte has been an integral member of the society. His passion for history sparked in his childhood and only grew as he immersed himself in local lore. Not long after joining, he was elected president of the board, a position he held for over two decades.

Pastor Tom Lucas to pass the reins of Merrick County food bank

On the first Saturday of the month, volunteers converged at the Central City airport to distribute boxes of food to local families, an initiative spearheaded by the Merrick County Food Bank. This gathering marked the penultimate event for Reverend Tom Lucas, who is preparing for retirement and will soon be handing over his responsibilities to a new reverend.

While the Super Mario brothers have made mushrooms iconic, Kylnn Knoll’s mushrooms in Central City offer a different kind of magic—holistic benefits. Known locally as the “doughnut shop guy,” Kylnn is now pioneering his “Funguy Farm.” “I got tired of serving people something so unhealthy and wanted to bring something beneficial to the community. Mushrooms have many great properties!” he explains.

Sunday there was no shortage of delicious food at the American Legion Post No. 6 and there also wasn’t a shortage of thankful baseball players who helped with the event. The fundraiser aimed to secure additional funds for Legion baseball and their pursuit of excellence this summer.

American Legion Post 6 Baseball Team Hosts Hog Roast

This past Sunday, the American Legion Post #6 baseball team hosted a Hog Roast at the Legion building to support their program and the upcoming season. The event attracted a large crowd, leaving hardly an empty seat in the legion club, as community members gathered to enjoy pulled pork and a variety of side dishes.

First graders Brock Olivo and Dylan Lovejoy work on figuring out the inner workings of their new savings banks, gifts from Archer Cooperative Credit union in celebration of the National Youth Savings Challenge and National Credit Union Youth Week. Archer Credit Union donated piggy banks to local elementary students. Staff from the credit union delivered piggy banks, pennies and coloring pages to first and second graders along with a short message about the importance of saving.
