Merrick Medical Center Foundation health professions scholarship recipients named

Each year the Merrick Medical Center Foundation offers scholarships to area High School Seniors who are pursuing a career in healthcare. The funds for the Health Professions Scholarships are made possible by the sports physical program in area schools. Each year the provider’s and staff from the Central City Medical Clinic generously donate their time to offer Sports Physical’s at area schools. All of the funds generated for these physicals go to the Merrick Medical Center Foundation to be given back to area students through scholarships.

A crowd of fifty or more gathered on the Merrick County Courthouse lawn on Thursday, May 1, to observe the National Day of Prayer. Area clergy led the audience in prayer for the nation and its people and officials.

Nebraska weekly gas price update

Average gasoline prices in Nebraska have fallen 1.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.31/g today, according to Gas-Buddy’s survey of 1,150 stations in Nebraska. Prices in Nebraska are 1 cent per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 4.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has dropped 3.4 cents in the last week and stands at $3.94 per gallon.

Farmers of Merrick County - Darrin Brown

For Darrin and Leah Brown, farming is a family tradition. Both sides of the family have farmed and both Darrin and Leah grew up on farms. Darrin’s dad, Larry Brown and Leah’s dad, Virgil Lindner are two men who are very passionate about farming. They specifically chose farming as their career. So Darrin and Leah are not strangers to farming, for them it is a way of life. From themselves to their fathers, to uncles and brothers, to their son Aaron...farming runs through their blood and appears in all the generations. “Farming and family is so intermingled, you can’t really separate it.”

Lone Tree Readers Host Nebraska Author Tosca Lee

The Lone Tree Readers hosted Nebraska Author Tosca Lee at the Central City Public Library at their first Monday of the month meeting. The group read THE LONG MARCH HOME for discussion and invited Tosca Lee to give personal insights on the novel based on the Bataan Death March (WWII in the Philippines) that she and Marcus Brotherton co-authored.
