MAC seeks carolers

During the month of December, the community is invited to join the caroling that will happen each Thursday for the Thursday Night Lights shopping events. The Merrick Arts Council is hoping to have a core group of people each Thursday, but everyone in the community is invited to join the group! Meet at the Venture Center a little before 5:30.

Christmas is once again coming into full swing. Lights are being put up in all the houses around town, and Christmas music is being played in many retail stores. Plans are being made for the holidays and Christmas lists are being written. As we head into the month of December, with all its stresses and merriment, what better way to get it started than with music.

Christie Abdul-Greene named Executive Director of Keep Omaha Beautiful

There are many kids who have grown up in our neighborhoods and passed through our school who have gone on to do big things out in the world. Christie Abdul-Greene, an alumni from Central City Public school, has been named the new executive director for Keep Omaha Beautiful, an environmental Non-Profit organization that has been serving the Omaha community since 1959.

Men’s Night makes return

The addition of COVID into our normal vocabulary meant that some of the great events that we once knew had to come to an end. Since then, we have welcomed many back and have done the same for the annual Merrick Medical Center Men’s Night held on Wednesday November 30, from 5:30-8:30 pm at the Merrick County 4-H Building.

CCHS to hold open house

The construction process at Central City Public Schools has been a lengthy one with various projects taking place over recent years. When the previous round of construction was completed the pandemic made it difficult to show off the progress to the community, but this time around the school is looking to do just that.

NRD Board approves infrared photography to enforce Water Quality Program

On Thursday, the Central Platte Natural Resources District (CPNRD) Board of Directors addressed the Infrared (IR) photography used by staff to see changes in irrigation practices for the Groundwater Management Program. IR Imagery of the entire District has been taken in August each year since 2004 and is used to determine if irrigation is present on acres that are not certified. IR imagery has been submitted as evidence to courts in the past to enforce irrigated acre compliance for the NRD’s Groundwater Quantity Program.

Sample for Soybean Cyst Nematode This Fall

Now that harvest is finished up and while you may still remember some low yielding areas in the soybean fields or have had a chance to look at the yield maps it is time to identify spots in the field to sample for Soybean Cyst Nematode. This small roundworm is the number one yield limiting biotic agent of soybeans in North America and is estimated to cause U.S. producers $1.5 billion a year. The reason this pest is so insidious is because SCN can cause up to 30% yield loss with no noticeable above ground symptoms. For this reason, SCN is an invisible threat that many producers do not know they have and are not actively managing.
