Local students embark on European adventure

In an inspiring journey that fused education, exploration, and music, four Central City High School students had the opportunity of a lifetime this summer. Cole Broekemeier, Bailey Greving, Noah Johnson, Garrett Schmierer, along with their beloved band director Alex Steinke, embarked on a 15-day tour across five European countries as a part of the Nebraska Ambassadors of Music group.

Dr. Brian Buhlke to be honored at UNK Alumni Awards

The University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) has announced the recipients of the 2023 UNK Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Awards, and Central City’s Dr. Brian Buhlke is among the honorees. Buhlke will be joined by fellow alumni award recipients Tim Carman (1984) and Tim Schlattmann (1985), along with the Jim Rundstrom Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipient Ryan Tworek (1998), and the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award recipient Dusty L. Birge (2011).

Local farm families honored at fair

The Wiegert Family Farm, with its roots reaching back more than a century and a half, was honored as a 2023 Heritage Farm Family at the Merrick County Fair Tuesday night. The Ferris Heritage, along with the Halstead/Ferris Windbreak Pasture were both celebrated as Pioneer Farm Families. Merrick County Ag Society President Russ Kucera and Vice President Isaac Jefferson presented the prestigious awards.

That’s why the introduction of the Community News and Small Business Support Act (H.R. 4756) comes as a significant step in ensuring the sustainability and growth of local news organizations. This bipartisan bill, introduced by Reps. Claudia Tenney, a Republican from New York, and Suzan DelBene, a Democrat from Washington, has received strong backing, including from the Nebraska Press Association and Rebuild Local News.

47th Annual Merrick County Derby dazzles once more along with second Junior Derby

Monday night echoed with the heart-thumping sounds of revving engines and crashing metal as the 47th annual Merrick County Demolition Derby, proudly organized by the Wells family, roared to its thrilling conclusion. The dust might have settled at the Merrick County Fair, but the memories of the exuberant crowds and fierce competition live on.

Central City Public Library adjusting to new space as renovations continue

The Central City Public Library has opened its doors to the public after being closed for renovations. While everything is not yet complete, they have been able to open their main floor so that visitors can come in and browse the many books and sit on the new comfy furniture situated throughout, and admire some of the new interior designs that have been added to the space.

Central City High School has a new football coach as Troy Huebert has taken over the program and moves closer to getting his first season started. Derek Rodine of Polk lost his life in a single vehicle car accident near Stromsburg.
