MSG Derek T. Jones, the son of Betty Jones and the late Thomas Jones, a 1997 Nebraska Christian graduate had a retirement celebration in North Carolina August 2, 2023 for his 20 year U.S. Army Career. At the age of 25 Derek entered active duty and graduated One Unit Station Infantry Training at Ft. Benning, GA in 2003.

For many, a childhood barbershop evokes memories akin to a second home: a haven of camaraderie, treasured memories, and fresh beginnings. Central City’s own, Matthew Hensley, understood this emotion deeply when he made the decision to rejuvenate a barbershop at the same place he often frequented as a youngster.

On Thursday, August 10, the 46ers hosted a Community Night Out, where a number citizens around central city opened their yards and garages to the town, offering food, drink and company to their neighbors and anyone else who wanted to stop by.

Last Friday, at the American Legion Post #6, a heartwarming ceremony unveiled, paying tribute to World War II veteran D.L. “Shorty” Hahn. Wrapped in a meticulously crafted ‘Quilt of Valor’, Mr. Hahn was enshrouded in the warmth of gratitude and respect from a community that reveres him.

As the lazy days of summer draw to a close and the promise of autumn beckons on the horizon, Central City’s school bells are poised to ring in a new academic year. This year, both Central City Public Schools and Nebraska Christian prepare to welcome back students, each with its distinct message of tradition, community, and growth.

The Collective is an activity center located next to the Fox Theater on Highway 30. The building was first purchased by the Merrick foundation with Doug and Kelly McHargue working as volunteers, but then since February, they have been able to purchase the building and have continued to improve it for the public. Doug McHargue, who along with his wife are both the Founders and Organizers for the activity center, described the collective as “A Community Service organization, designed as a place for people to gather for the greater good.”

Merrick Arts Council is excited to announce their 2023-24 season with five new shows. All programs will be performed in the Central City Performing Arts Center, Edwin and Bernice Lock Theatre and are available by season membership or single ticket shows.
