Based on October 1 conditions, Nebraska’s 2023 corn production is forecast at 1.67 billion bushels, up 15% from last year’s production, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 9.59 million acres, is up 9% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 174 bushels per acre, up 9 bushels from last year.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Says Proposed EPA Pesticide Restrictions Too Aggressive

Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) is urging farmers and ranchers to join the organization in submitting comments on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed new rule that heavily increases limitations and regulations on pesticides. Earlier this year, the EPA released the “Draft Herbicide Strategy Framework” in response to extensive litigation about the agency’s noncompliance with the Endangered Species Act (ESA). NEFB says the more than 90-page proposal outlines a new method of pesticide labeling, adding highly burdensome restrictions to herbicide use in many areas.

Julie Baker Quartet Show October 29

Merrick Arts Council’s second show of the season will feature the Julie Baker Quartet on Sunday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. This program will take place at the Central City Performing Arts Center, Edwin and Bernice Lock Theatre. The show will feature vocalist Julie Baker and a three-piece combo. Although classically trained, her performances are versatile featuring many styles such as pop, jazz, soul, and rhythm and blues. Audiences describe her voice as angelic, sultry, soulful, crystalline, dazzling, and smooth. Born and raised in Ericson, Nebraska, Baker began singing at an early age, showing a true talent. At the age of 15, she joined her first band, “Cactus Jack and the Sneak Attack.” While still in high school, she was accepted into a high school specifically for students gifted in the arts in Champaign, Illinois which she attended for one year. She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in music education. She taught music in public schools, eventually being awarded the Nebraska Educator’s Association “Education in Excellence” award. Today she spends most of her time focusing on her love of performing.
