The annual Crossroads Conference wrestling meet brought with it plenty of excitement as High Plains Community secured a third place team finsih. One of the biggest moments of the day came from Gage Friesen who notched his 100th career victory. Friesen finished runnerup along with Caleb Sharman. Leading the way for the Storm were Hudson Urkoski and Wyatt Urkoski who both earned conference championships. Neddy Lesiak earned a fourth place finish while Aaron Brown earned a fifth place finish. The Storm will hit the mats in Pleasanton this weekend for the D-3 district meet. (Courtesy Photo)

Central City wrestlers set for State Dual Championships after dominant Ainsworth Invite performance

Following an impressive victory at the Ainsworth Invite, the Central City Bison wrestling team is turning its focus to the 2024 NSAA State Dual Championships. The Bison, seeded sixth, have their sights set on a strong showing this Saturday in Kearney to cap off an outstanding dual season.

Bison hoops teams encounter mixed fortunes in Lou-Platte Conference action

The Central City Bison basketball teams had a night of contrasting destinies this past Tuesday in the Lou-Platte Conference basketball tournament. While the boys’ team continued their winning ways against St. Paul with a 44-32 victory, the Lady Bison faced a setback, falling 41-32 in a closely contested game, marking their first loss of January.

Tough Down the Stretch

As the calender turns to February, the wrestling season is coming down the stretch with wrestlers looking to make a final push towards Omaha. Wrestlers like NC’s Zach Huenefeld (top left), Gage Friesen (top right) and Wyatt Urkoski (bottom) have proved to be contenders as they made the finals at the Doniphan-Trumbull Invite. Area wrestlers will look to finish the regular season strong this week.

Eagles and Storm chase medals in Doniphan

At the Doniphan-Trumbull Invitational, wrestlers from High Plains Community and Nebraska Christian Eagles demonstrated impressive skill and resilience. The High Plains Storm saw Aaron Brown (144 pounds) kick off with a challenging start, but he claimed a victory over Kyson Gilliland of Shelton, contributing 1.0 team point to his team’s effort. Gage Friesen, in the same weight class, showcased his dominance throughout the tournament, ultimately placing second and adding 20.0 team points.
