Torpin honored as Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska

What started as a simple patriotic luncheon at the Good Samaritan Community turned into a moment of statewide honor for Alice Hartford Torpin on July 2. Expecting only to share a festive afternoon with neighbors and friends, Torpin was stunned when State Senator Loren Lippincott entered the room and presented her with a certificate declaring her an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska — the state’s highest honorary title.

Local students complete degrees at Wichita State University

More than 1,950 students completed a total of 2,122 degrees and certificates at Wichita State University in spring 2025. The breakdown of degrees and certificates granted includes: Undergraduate: 1,430 degrees and certificates for 1,340 undergraduate students Graduate: 692 degrees and certifi cates for 611 graduate students For bachelor’s degrees, honors were conferred to the following: Summa cum laude: 108 students Magna cum laude: 425 students Cum laude: 336 students Undergraduate students who have attained a grade point average of 3.9 out of a possible 4.0 received the summa cum laude award; those with an average of 3.55 received the magna cum laude award; and those with an average of 3.25 received the cum laude.

Trump administration announces expedited congressionally mandated disaster assistance for farmers

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced today that agricultural producers who suffered eligible crop losses due to natural disasters in 2023 and 2024 can now apply for $16 billion in assistance through the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program (SDRP).
