Central City Police to enforce ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ during Labor Day crackdown

The Central City Police Department has received funding through the national campaign and will step up enforcement efforts between August 16 and September 1 to reduce the number of impaired drivers on Nebraska roads. “Central City, this Labor Day weekend, let’s all pledge to be responsible,” said Police Chief Mark Dreher.

Communal garden thrives in first year

What began as a freshly tilled patch of earth on the east side of the United Methodist Church this spring has now blossomed into a vibrant community garden—rich in both produce and purpose. The vision, sparked by Reverend Francis Kinyua, was to create a shared space where anyone could grow fruits and vegetables. Months later, thanks to the collective efforts of church members and local volunteers, that vision has taken root.

The summer sun is starting to set on lazy mornings and poolside afternoons as local students prepare to trade flip-flops for backpacks and sunscreen for school supplies. It’s officially back-to-school time in our area, with the 2025–26 academic year set to begin for most local schools in mid-August.

Student Loan Relief for CRNAs in Rural Communities

The Nebraska Loan Repayment Program (NLRP) is now offering student loan repayment of up to $90,000 for qualified Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists who agree to work in rural communities and state-designated shortage areas. Applicants must have employment lined up at a site in a qualifying shortage area before applying. NLRP requires a 50/50 match for student loan repayment funding between the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and a local employer.

USDA designates 12 Nebraska counties as natural disaster areas due to drought

This Secretarial natural disaster designation allows the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters through emergency loans. Emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation, or to refinance certain debts. FSA will review the loans based on the extent of losses, security available, and repayment ability.
