For the week ending July 9, 2023, there were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 14% very short, 26% short, 57% adequate, and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 23% very short, 38% short, 38% adequate, and 1% surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 5% very poor, 10% poor, 23% fair, 41% good, and 21% excellent. Corn silking was 21%, ahead of 7% last year and 15% for the five-year average.

Nebraska producers planted 9.50 million acres of corn for all purposes, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 1% from last year. Of the total acres, 94% were planted with biotechnology varieties, down 1 percentage point from 2022. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 9.16 million acres, up 4% from a year ago. Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 5.50 million acres, down 4% from last year. Of these, 93% were planted with genetically modified, herbicide resistant seed, down 3 percentage point from 2022. Producers expect to harvest 5.45 million acres, down 4% from a year ago.

Wagner and City Council honored

The City Council of Central City met on Monday night for their monthly meeting, but before they could officially get down to business there was first a couple of special presentations that needed take place. The first was courtesy of the American Legion Post #6 who was represented by Tom Reimers and Jim Larson as the duo offered a certificate of appreciation to the City Council for their assistance in purchasing new flags at the Central City Cemetery.
