Operation Shine Camp shines bright once more

The Kids and Dreams Foundation put on one of their annual weekend Operation Shine camps at Covenant Cedars Camp located just outside Central City over the weekend of June 7 through 9. Operation shine camps are specifically tailored to children ages 7-12 experiencing Autism Spectrum Disorder and related conditions. The days include arts and crafts, swimming, fishing, archery, crate skating, sensory activities, and so much more!

American Legion Post #6 hosts successful 13th Annual Ribfest

The Central City American Legion held their 13th annual Ribfest on this past Saturday, with 8 cooks competing for 1st place and the people’s choice award. The weather was warm but there were enough clouds to provide a little shade from the sun from time to time. Already when you are walking from the parking lot to the front gate, the smell of ribs is hanging in the air.

Local law enforcement leaders honored with Patriot Award during Council meeting

The City Council held their monthly meeting on June 10th at 7 p.m. The meeting was called to order in traditional fashion by Mayor Tim Bolling and started off by opening the floor to Officer Dickhaut of the Central City Police Department. Officer Dickhaut serves in the National Guard and has been serving as an emergency management supervisor for the Air National Guard. Officer Dickhaut nominated Chief Mark Dreher and Sergeant Todd Church for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award, to which both Officer Church and Chief Dreher were selected and awarded the Patriot Award. The Office of the Secretary of Defense awards these to individual employment supervisors for “Contributing to National Security and Protecting Liberty and Freedom by Supporting Employee Participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve Forces.”

Central City Subway offers scholarships to employees

Subway in Central City proudly offers a scholarship program for employees who work with the company throughout their high school years and beyond. The scholarship amount varies based on the length of employment and hours worked, with an average tenure of 2-3 years. Additionally, Subway employees have the opportunity to apply for a $2,500 corporate scholarship.

Central Community College Spring Honor Lists

Central Community College has announced the names of full-time students who earned spots on the President’s and Dean’s honor lists for the 2024 spring semester. The students were enrolled at one or more CCC locations, which include the Columbus, Grand Island and Hastings campuses and the Holdrege, Kearney, Lexington and Ord centers. Students on the President’s Honor List earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average while students on the Dean’s Honor List earned a GPA between 3.5 and 3.99.

Buhlke receives plaque

On Monday night at the Central City Ambulance’s regular monthly meeting Dr. Brian Buhlke was gifted a plaque of appreciation to thank him for his 23 years of service as the medical director of the ambulance. Dr. Rick Poppe will be the new medical director.

NDA announces delegates attending 2024 Nebraska Ag Youth Institute

High school students continue to show their passion for agriculture and their enthusiasm to attend Nebraska’s premier youth ag event, the Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute (NAYI). The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) received a record number of applications from high school juniors and seniors across the state to attend NAYI this summer. NAYI brings together hundreds of students every year to learn more about Nebraska agriculture, network with ag leaders and explore career opportunities. This year, NAYI will be held July 8-12 on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus.
