Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) and Nebraska’s congressional delegation are sounding the alarm on a looming tax increase that could strike a major financial blow to families, businesses, and farmers and ranchers across the state. As key provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) set to expire at the end of 2025, NEFB is warning that inaction by Congress could devastate families and rural communities.
Nebraska corn farmers poised to plant 10.6 million acres in 2025

According to the March Prospective Plantings report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Nebraska corn farmers are expected to plant 10.6 million acres of corn in 2025. If realized, this would translate to a significant economic investment of nearly $3.1 billion in the state’s economy over a two-month period, as calculated by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s crop budgets. This investment includes inputs such as seed, fuel and fertilizer, but excludes land costs, labor and equipment.
Central City’s spring cleaning day

Saturday, this year’s Spring-Cleaning Day was held at Strobel Fabrication on a chilly but bearable morning. Despite the cold and slightly-rainy conditions, numerous denizens of Central City braved the weather to attend the event, bringing trailers full of unwanted belongings to dispose of. The event was a hit, as nearly 10 vehicles showed up in the first 10 minutes, with some showing up a few minutes before the event started.

On the morning of April 23, a meeting was held at the Merrick Foundation building in Central City to discuss existing preparations for the forty-third annual Bike Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN), along with introducing new ideas to the table.

April is Occupational Therapy Month, a time to honor the dedicated professionals who help individuals regain independence, improve quality of life, and engage meaningfully with the world around them. At Merrick Medical Center in Central City, the occupational therapy (OT) team goes above and beyond to serve patients across the lifespan, offering essential support for both short-term recovery and long-term well-being. This month, the spotlight shines on two of the center’s highly respected occupational therapists: Megan Holtgrewe and Christina Flodman.

Grace Lutheran Church to celebrate 100 years in Central City

Central City’s Grace Lutheran Church will mark a major milestone on Sunday, April 27, as it celebrates 100 years of faith and fellowship. The centennial service begins at 9 a.m. and will include a special visit from Bishop Scot A. Johnson of the Nebraska Synod ELCA. Following the worship service and communion, a brunch will be held to continue the celebration. All members of the community are invited to attend.
Merrick County nonprofits prepare for Go Big GIVE event on May 1

A powerful spirit of giving is set to return to Merrick County and surrounding areas as Go Big GIVE kicks off on Thursday, May 1, 2025. The 24-hour online fundraising event brings together communities from Hall, Hamilton, Howard, and Merrick Counties to support local nonprofit organizations in a collective push to grow philanthropy, raise awareness, and strengthen the region.
