Merrick County Historical Museum

Body
Historic Locations of the Merrick County Fair The Merrick County Agricultural and Fair Association had its beginnings in 1874. The Association purchased eighty acres of land for the fair grounds and in 1876, twenty acres were sold for a cemetery. This land is included in the present day Central City Cemetery. The exhibition grounds were situated one and one-half miles north of town. These fair grounds were the first of four different locations. According to the 1899 Merrick County plat book, the second fair grounds was located at the intersection of Washburn and 13th Street, three blocks north of Ormsby Road at the northwest edge of Central City. Beginning in 1907 the fair was located at Clarks in a cottonwood grove on the southwest corner of the section north of town. The first 4-H club exhibits at the fair began in 1914. Early day admission tickets were $1.50 for a season ticket, 35 cents single adult admission, 15 cents children’s single admission and Children’s Day, when all under 12 years of age were admitted free. The present fairgrounds site, west of Central City, was purchased about 1926 and more permanent buildings were erected at that time.
