An exciting addition to Central City High School this year has been the introduction of a Mechatronics program offered in conjunction with Central Community College. Mechatronics covers a wide range of skills needed in the modern automated manufacturing industry, and students who participate in this program explore computer automated machines and develop problem solving and troubleshooting skills in mechanical, electrical, fluid power and programming areas.

Earlier this month we participated in Small Town Market Days. I hope you had some new shoppers and saw a little more traffic at your businesses. Please thank these chamber members for help in sponsoring STMD in Central City: Ann Heinen, Rick and Kazuko Kunz, Local EDGE, Prairie Island Poppers, Hermsmeyer Detailing, Magnolias Boutique, MidAmerica Speakers Bureau, Runza, Trijuvenate Natural Health, Wild Roots Greenhouse and Market, EyeCare Associates, Central City Housing Agency, Merrick Medical Center, Trav’s U-Save Pharmacy, Azria Health, Merrick Foundation and Holy Grounds. A shout out goes to Brandy Rima of Brandy’s Balloons for helping to organize the vendor events. It really does take each of us supporting all of us to succeed!

Here’s an EPIC Option for fixing the tax code The past two weeks in this space we have looked at our abysmal tax system and I have hammered on the principle that the government should promote economic productivity, not penalize it. Sadly, however, our current tax system not only punishes productivity but also allows far too many citizens to benefit from government goods and services without personal cost. (State government statistics show 40 percent of Nebraskans pay no income or property taxes.)

I am thrilled to be taking on this new journey as the Band Director for Central City Public Schools. I grew up on a farm with my sister and my parents near North Loup, NE and attended Ord High School. In high school I was very involved in the arts, cross country and track. I recently graduated from Midland University where I was actively involved in band, jazz band, choir, a capella, and theatre. I was president of the Alpha-Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Psi and vice president of our honorary theatre society, Alpha Psi Omega. After student teaching 5-12 music in Arlington, I was fortunate to land this amazing job with the Bison Band. I have really enjoyed getting to know the staff and students of Central City, and I am happy to be a part of this community.

Loren Lippincott, District 34 Senator Our Abysmal Tax Code – Part 2 “Nothing is certain except death and taxes,” observed Benjamin Franklin. Since he penned that proverb in 1789 taxes have taken many new forms with deadly consequences for our economy.

Editor: This article I’m sending you, written by myself, reflects THE TRUE STORY OF “DWI” (Now DUI) checkpoints circa late 1970’s early 80’s as my wife was the secretary for a certain Captain John Baker and I also knew him well. This is in response to your article about the C.C.
