Leaders Act, Leaders Say, Leaders Think, Leaders Are, Leaders Can, and Leaders Have. 5th grade students became very familiar with these statements throughout their Leadership class this school year. Each fifth grade student is given the opportunity to be a part of a trimester leadership class. Students begin the trimester by working in groups to talk about leadership qualities that good leaders possess. Students then have the opportunity to connect with local leaders in our community by visiting a variety of businesses. The business leaders share different leadership qualities they need in order for their business to succeed. Qualities business owners make sure to address include the importance of teamwork, accountability, communication, and problem-solving skills.

More than 60 high school seniors will begin their studies at the University of Nebraska at Kearney this fall as members of a prestigious health science program. Representing communities across the state, the students selected for the Kearney Health Opportunities Program (KHOP) demonstrate both academic excellence and a commitment to serving rural areas as future health care professionals.

Dylan Pfeifer is only a sophomore at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, but he’s already making connections with potential employers and planning his future career. The Central City native wants to work in rural health care, so he’s looking for ways to network with professionals in the field and learn more about providers across the state.

The sky hung heavy with gray clouds Monday morning, casting a somber tone over the corner of town where memories had stacked up like bottles on a shelf. The first bite of metal into walls sent a shudder through the old structure, shaking loose the dust of decades. With every crash of falling debris, another piece of Central City’s past crumbled to the ground.

It has been a busy year so far and I will take this time to catch up on what has been happening at the Chamber. We had a successful Gala celebration.

Students at Central City Public Schools are celebrating the joy of reading with Read Across America Week, a nationwide initiative established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1997. The program, originally designed as a single-day event on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday—has evolved into a week-long celebration aimed at encouraging students to embrace literacy in a fun and engaging way. This year, Central City students are participating in a variety of themed days to bring excitement to the school day while promoting reading. The week began on Monday, March 3, with no school due to parent-teacher conferences. On Tuesday, March 4, students were encouraged to bring their water in anything but a traditional water bottle, leading to creative and sometimes humorous alternatives. Wednesday, March 5, gave students the opportunity to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character or wear their silliest mis-matched clothes in the spirit of fun. On Thursday, March 6, students will celebrate Hat Day by wearing their favorite headwear, allowing them to skip their usual morning hair routine in favor of something more festive. The week will conclude on Friday, March 7, with Pajama Day, where students can wear their coziest sleepwear while enjoying a good book.
