Visitors at Sunday’s Central City Fire Department open house enjoy poring over photo albums and other memorabilia from the department’s history.

Seven local seniors named as NSAA Believers & Achievers

Seven area high school seniors have earned a special place among Nebraska’s top student leaders. The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) and Currency recently announced the 2024-25 Believers & Achievers, a program that recognizes seniors across the state for their outstanding contributions to academics, leadership, and community service. Local honorees include Kit Brooks and Gracie Vakiner from Central City High School; Gage Friesen, Allie Howell, and Courtney Carlstrom from High Plains Community; and Ah-Rim Lee and Isabelle Brumbaugh from Nebraska Christian.

Nebraska professor shares insights on Kenyan tribe with CCHS sophomores

For the past few months, the Central City High School sophomore class has been learning about the Daasanach tribe from Kenya. The class’s teacher, Mrs. Chelle Gillan, had the opportunity to observe the Daasanach during a trip in 2022. On Thursday, the class heard from Matt Douglass, director of the Master of Applied Science Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, anthropology researcher, and associate professor. Douglass, a Nebraska native from Columbus, has conducted numerous projects around the world, studying different cultures.

The changing of the seasons serves as a gentle reminder that life moves forward, yet with every step into the future, we must also look back and honor the chapters of our past—particularly those written by the brave men and women who answered the call to defend our nation.

From the diamond to discovery: Gabrielle Moser’s journey from Central City to biomechanics research

Gabrielle “Gabby” Moser has always been a force of nature, whether she was on the softball diamond or in the lab. A 2020 graduate of Central City High School, Moser went on to pursue her passion for science at the University of South Dakota (USD), where she played collegiate softball while earning her Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical engineering. Now, in 2024, her academic and research journey has taken her to the University of Nebraska-Omaha (UNO), where she’s working on her master’s degree in biomechanics while contributing to groundbreaking research aimed at improving the lives of veterans and soldiers.
