Drive across Nebraska on a clear evening and you’ll see why we call it “The Good Life.” Small towns where neighbors still wave. Safe communities where kids ride their bikes home at dusk. Main streets where people know your name and your word still means something.

For many Nebraskans, parenthood brings both immense joy and real challenges every day. As a father of two, I can say without hesitation that there is no greater calling in life than being a parent. While fatherhood has been one of the greatest blessings in my life, it is unrealistic to say it is not challenging.

On Sunday, like millions of Americans, I kept my eye on the Super Bowl. Not the world’s biggest fan of pro football, and with really no rooting interest in the game, I had it on, paid periodic attention to the action on the field, but stayed glued to the television when the ads came on.

This week, we celebrate National School Choice Week. As Senator, common-sense education policy is a top priority. My mother was a proud Nebraska educator. I know how much Nebraska teachers do for students and families. We saw this especially during the pandemic. As a father of three, I know that classrooms thrive when they’re tailored to the students. And not every child learns the same way. Children should be given a choice in their education. The quality of a child’s education should not depend on their zip code. I support initiatives that will prioritize students’ needs.

I have an old mantra that, if you want to be a good community journalist, just make sure that you say the Pledge of Allegiance or stand for the national anthem at least three or four times a week. If you are doing that, then there is a good chance that you are covering your community well.

Since then, we have seen a long fight, and recent victories, in protecting young lives. The Dobbs decision restored the right of the American people to enact pro-life laws through the democratic process. There is work still to be done.

Throughout my tenure as Chair of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade, one thing has always been evident: trade works best when it is built on relationships, trust, and time. Agreements are not simply ink on paper, but signals to workers, farmers, and businesses about how the United States is committed to showing up, year after year, as a reliable partner.
