Dean was born on April 29, 1941 to Charles and Clara (Burkhardt) Eckstrom in Palmer. He grew up in the Palmer area until 1965, when he moved to Central City. On September 10, 1966, Dean was united in marriage to Donna Fishler at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City. He worked at Foster Lumber in Central City for over thirty years. He then worked at Century Lumber in Grand Island and Sack Lumber in St. Paul. Following that he began his own business D&D Building Supply in Central City, where he operated until his retirement. In December of 2023, Dean and Donna moved to Omaha.

Dean loved to tend to his garden. He also enjoyed visiting with people, but his greatest love was getting to spend time with his family. He was a member of the Central City City Council, as well as a member of First Christian Church and later Community Bible Church in Central City.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Donna; his children, Kelly (Kenny) Gomez of Conroe, Texas, Michael (Nicole) Eckstrom of Omaha, and Shawn (Rebecca) Eckstrom of Eugene, Oregon; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Clarence Eckstrom, Charlene Betts, and Clarice Ann Addisson.
