Darrell Lee Montgomery March 7, 1931~ June 29, 2023

Darrell Lee Montgomery, 92, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 29, 2023. Born March 7, 1931 in Central City to Thomas & Ruth (Nugent) Montgomery.

Funeral Services: Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 11:00am at Lincoln Berean Church, 6400 S. 70th St. (North entrance), Lincoln. Visitation: Friday, July 14th from 4-7PM at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home (4040 A Street, Lincoln). Memorials to The People’s City Mission.

Condolences may be left online at www.bmlfh.com In 1949, Darrell won the Class B Championship in track for the 1-mile competition. While attending Kearney State University, he was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War. He trained in Fort Riley, KS before being deployed to Germany. After his Honorable Discharge in 1954, Darrell went on to receive his Bachelors Degree and later a Masters degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He worked in the education system for over 40 years, teaching in Dunning Silver Creek and was Superintendent of Schools in Hordville, Dorchester and for 23 years at Humboldt Public Schools before retiring in 1989.

He married Ruth Schreiber in 1956 and they were happily married for 67 years. After his retirement, they moved to Lincoln where he enjoyed umpiring little league baseball for 15 years and volunteering at the Food Bank. He was a member of the NE State Teachers Association, the School Administrators Association, Toastmasters and Rotary. He was a member of the Lincoln Berean Church for the last 34 years.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Ruth; Children, Gary Montgomery of Omaha; Chris (Patti) Montgomery of Lincoln; Grandchildren, Samuel & Josephine.
