Janet Louise Eckes of Murrieta, California, age 92, died at her home with her daughter and grandsons by her side on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2023. A graveside service was held March 2 at Murrieta Valley Cemetery where she was interred beside her husband Le Roy H. Eckes. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to England Family Mortuary of Temecula, CA.
She was born Janet L. Campbell on Sept. 23, 1930, to Robert V. and Margaret L. Campbell of Central City, Nebraska. She graduated from Central City High School before heading to Lindenwood College in Missouri. She later moved on to earning a Bachelors degree from the University of Nebraska. Janet would go on to settle in Southern California when becoming a stewardess with United Airlines.
True to her Nebraska upbringing, she loved all animals, especially the many horses and dogs who she cared for through the years. Janet was a dedicated supporter of the Nebraska Cornhusker football team and a lifetime subscriber to the Central City Republic Nonpareil, keeping tabs on the happenings back home as she always considered Central City ‘home’. Janet attended several of her high school reunions in Central City since her graduation in 1948.
Her marriage to Walter Miller ended in divorce, but they remained true friends. Janet was then married for 39 years to Lee Eckes until his passing in 2007. She was preceded in passing by her folks, her sister, Marianna C. Myers, and her step-daughter Ceil Miller. Janet is survived by her daughter Melissa Miller, grandsons Jacob and Joseph Hetrick, cousin John Engel, and nephew Robert J. Myers, and most importantly, her beloved dog Teddy.
