2021 Kernels District Championship Team

Body

As many of you know, I am a big fan of our local teams and that includes the Central City/Fullerton, Central City/Fullerton/Centura and Central City/Centura Kernels. I've been there from day one, watching as the Kernels etched their names into the heart of our community. As they make their fourth consecutive appearance at the NSAA State Baseball Tournament, it’s impossible not to reflect on the journey that has brought us here. This year is especially significant; it marks the first chapter without Fullerton, an integral part of our storied co-op history since the Kernels beginning. We're navigating these familiar yet new waters without our Warriors, driven by the spirit that has been part of our DNA since the beginning.

Our program’s foundation was laid by the heroes of the past—those 1956, 1957, and 1960 Central City championship teams, and even the 1962 squad that valiantly finished as runners-up. Their victories weren’t just wins; they were promises of the potential locked within our community and a roadmap to future success. We've all but forgotten that difficult first Kernels game against Hastings, choosing instead to remember how each season, win or loss, built us stronger.

In recent years, the Kernels have not clinched a championship, yet they've displayed commendable resilience and spirit. Their battles in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 state tournaments—against formidable teams like Omaha Skutt Catholic, Beatrice, and Wayne—have shown that while we may falter, we never fall. This persistence is a testament to the program that many hands and hearts have built—a program that is, indeed, battle-tested.

Today, as our Kernels step onto the field, they carry more than just the hopes of Central City; they carry a legacy—a legacy of all those who have donned our colors, from Fullerton to Centura and those Bison teams of yesteryear. It’s more than a pursuit of excellence; it’s a tribute to every player who has contributed to our rich history. This team, this family of athletes and supporters, is ready to write new chapters, aiming not just to compete but to endure, to stand the test of time.

As I share this journey with you, our readers and our community, we stand united behind our Kernels. We look forward to capturing more unforgettable moments of our legacy, ready for the triumphs and trials that lie ahead.

The game goes on, and so does the Kernels story.
