William “Bill” Winslow Stahn was born February 18, 1937 to Clyde and Irma (Cipra) Stahn on the farm located near Woodruff, Kansas. He attended country school, also attended school at Long Island and graduated from Orleans High School in 1954. After high school, he helped farm until he attended Milford Technical College that fall.
Bill was called to enter the Army in January 1955. He had his basic training at Fort Carson and was sent to Fort Knox for wheeled vehicle school. From there, he went overseas to Berlin, Germany until November 1957. He served with the 6th Infantry regiment. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he came back to the farm and performed disc rolling for the area farmers. He then re-enrolled at Milford in 1959 and graduated in 1961 for diesel mechanics.
Bill began his mechanic work in Hastings for a short time, then moved to Grand Island, where he worked for Highway GMC and Lincoln Equipment. He worked for several mechanic shops until 1969. In 1970, he decided to drive semis and not work on them anymore. He began his truck driving career at Redman Homes in Grand Island. Bill met Sharee Neeman during this time, and they were married October 8, 1972 in Grand Island. Bill adopted Sharee’s daughter JoAnna soon after. Ten months later, Bill and Sharee had a son, Ty.
Bill worked as a truck driver for many companies until buying his own semi and driving for himself. He partially retired in 2009 and fully retired from truck driving in 2018. He moved to Central City in 2019 to be closer to family. Bill enjoyed old tractors, cars, and planes. He enjoyed family gatherings, planting a garden each spring, and “Beer 30” in the evenings outside.
