The 51st annual Roger Nielsen Cross Country Invite is set to unfold today at Valley View Country Club, and fans from across Central Nebraska will be treated to some of the finest high school running talent in the state. Both the Central City Bison and Nebraska Christian Eagles are primed to make an impact in this prestigious event, joined by a strong lineup of teams from across the region, including Aurora, Grand Island Central Catholic, and Northwest. The invite promises an exciting day of competition on a challenging course.

For the Central City Bison, senior Austin (AJ) Wood continues to lead the charge. Wood clocked a time of 19:05 at his previous meet, and he’s expected to be one of the top contenders once again today. He’ll be backed by a strong team effort, including juniors Paul Johnson, who finished his last race in 19:46, and Jacob Zimmerman, who ran a 19:53. Central City’s depth is bolstered by runners like Fyn Fasbender and Dominic Fristoe, who posted times of 23:18 and 25:33, respectively, as well as Christian Cole and Dylan Church, who will round out the team’s efforts.

On the girls' side, Central City’s young standout, freshman Amelia (Mimi) Buhlke, has been a rising star, finishing her last race in 23:07. Seniors Janaya Davis and Julia Buss have been consistent as well, running times of 23:37 and 24:18. With senior Kit Brooks, who clocked a 26:50 last time out, and freshman Tallie Havenridge, who finished in 30:25, Central City’s girls team is looking to make a statement on their home course today.

The Nebraska Christian Eagles come into the meet with their own strong lineup, highlighted by sophomore Jacob Swanson, who leads the Eagles with an impressive time of 16:28 in his last outing. Following Swanson, fellow sophomore Luke Powell brings speed to the squad, having posted an 18:56 recently. The Eagles will also feature talented underclassmen like Quentin Herman and Tanapoom “TaTa” Poongkumarn, who ran times of 21:31 and 23:03, respectively, giving Nebraska Christian a solid core.

On the girls' side, Nebraska Christian has been particularly formidable. Freshman Grace Nokelby ran an impressive 22:04 in her last meet, continuing to show why she is one to watch. Sophomore Addie Edson posted a 22:42, and senior Gracie Hackel ran a 23:11, giving the Eagles plenty of top-tier talent to challenge for the top team spot. Senior Izzy Brumbaugh, who clocked a 23:23, and sophomore Abby Berck, who ran a 26:37, round out the team’s deep roster.

The Valley View course presents a challenging mix of hills and scenic stretches that will test the runners' endurance and strategy. With a 4:30 PM start time for the girls and the boys' race set for 5:00 PM, fans will be treated to back-to-back excitement, followed by an awards ceremony at 5:45 PM.

The Bison and Eagles will be eager to prove themselves against tough competition from schools like Ord, Schuyler, and Riverside. As the runners toe the line, the stage is set for a day of hard-fought competition and thrilling finishes at the Roger Nielsen Invite. Both Central City and Nebraska Christian are ready to give it their all, making today’s race a must-watch event for local cross country fans.
