Bison Softball 2024: Small Roster, Big Talent
As the sun rises on the 2024 high school softball season, the Central City Bison are charging onto the field with renewed vigor and ambition. Last year's stellar 33-5 record is a tough act to follow, but the Bison are no strangers to high expectations. With Head Coach Neely Moser at the helm—marking her 10th year with an impressive career record of 186-107—the team is primed to continue its tradition of excellence, even as they navigate the challenges of filling the cleats left behind by six graduated seniors.
At the heart of this year’s squad are several returning players, each poised to make their mark. Junior Payton Burbach, a force to be reckoned with at the plate, is transitioning from shortstop to pitcher—a role that comes with its own set of pressures. With a jaw-dropping .495 batting average and a .826 slugging percentage from last season, Burbach’s versatility is sure to shine as she takes on this new challenge. Coach Moser speaks highly of her, noting, “She was our shortstop last year but will be taking over the pitching duties this season.”
Anchoring the infield at second base is the team’s lone senior, Emma Steinke. Steinke's leadership is as crucial as her defensive prowess, and her .357 batting average underscores her consistency. “She is our only senior and will be a great leader for us,” Moser emphasized, highlighting Steinke's role as the guiding force for her younger teammates.
The Bison's infield is further fortified by junior Deja Fothergill, who steps into the shortstop position after proving her mettle at third base last year. Though her batting average sat at .192, Fothergill's defensive capabilities are integral to the team’s success. Her experience in the infield will be invaluable as the team navigates a tough season.
Behind the plate, junior Emma Brandes returns to handle the catching duties, having split time in that role last season. With a .250 batting average, Brandes is expected to contribute significantly both defensively and offensively. Her adaptability will also see her taking on responsibilities in the outfield when needed.
Every team needs a spark, and for the Bison, that could well come from junior Londyn Fisher. After a strong summer ball season, Fisher is stepping up to assume a more prominent role. Her .160 batting average from last year belies her potential—a potential that Coach Moser is eager to see fully realized this season.
The sophomore class brings its own set of talents, led by Juno Ryan and Paige Grigsby. Ryan, who made her mark as a courtesy runner last year, is determined to contribute more substantially with both the bat and glove. Grigsby, having battled injuries last season, is looking to make a triumphant return. Her outstanding performance at the plate during the summer has set high expectations for the upcoming season.
Adding fresh energy to the roster are three incoming freshmen: Journi Schindler, Sophie Moser, and Riley Burbach. These young players, all with ties to former Bison stars, are expected to infuse the team with the same competitive spirit and drive that has long been a hallmark of Central City softball.
Also rounding out the squad is junior Abigail Coleman, whose role will be pivotal in ensuring the Bison maintain their depth and flexibility throughout the season.
Coach Moser is realistic about the challenges the Bison face, particularly in filling the leadership void left by last year's seniors. “We had six seniors graduate, so just filling those roles and the leadership will be our challenge this season,” she acknowledged. However, Moser remains confident in her team's ability to rise to the occasion. “I anticipate that we will compete hard as we always do. The goal is always to leave it all on the field and to be the best we can be.”
To reach their goals, the Bison will need to stay healthy and keep their confidence levels high—key factors that Coach Moser stressed as critical to their success.
The road ahead is anything but easy, with a demanding schedule that will test the Bison at every turn. From triangulars to tournaments, the Bison will have ample opportunities to showcase their skills and prove their mettle.
