A 19-year veteran in education, Central City High School’s Chelle Gillan has helped build one of the top science research programs in the state. Her students interact with experts all over the globe as they work to solve real world problems. Mrs. Gillan also lives life to the fullest with an impressive list of accomplishments that helped her earn the 2023 R-N Person of the Year title. Her impact was evident on the last day of school before Christmas break as many students were distracted by the upcoming departure from school. Kit Brooks, Julia Buss and Alyssa Wood continued to work on their research while Central City High School Instrumental Music instructor Kyler Peetz even joined in as a research subject.

As the Central City High School hallways buzz with the energy of eager learners, at its core is a figure who embodies not just educational excellence, but a spirit of relentless pursuit of personal growth and community service. Mrs. Chelle Gillan, a science instructor par excellence, has been named the Central City Republican-Nonpareil Person of the Year for 2023, a fitting tribute to a woman who has become a pillar of the Central City community.
Mrs. Gillan’s dedication to teaching is evident in her own words, “My big passion is scientific research... helping students to learn how to think and understand that science is important to all of us.” Her repertoire extends beyond biology to courses like anatomy, physiology, and scientific research. Gillan herself is still learning in the classroom and in life.
This past year has brought her many opportunities to push her own boundaries with great successes, including being a finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. She reflects on her nomination for the prestigious STEM award, “You become a better teacher in applying for this award... whether I achieve [the national award] or not, I have gained a lot.”
Her personal transformation story is nothing short of inspiring. Battling weight issues and realizing the need for change, Mrs. Gillan embarked on a journey of self-improvement. “I just have to make a change,” she recalls. Her journey to better health was marked by dedication and perseverance, as she transformed from someone who disliked running to someone who found it indispensable.
Mrs. Gillan’s commitment to community service is exemplified by her participation in the MS Run the US Relay Team where she used her new found love of running for the greater good. She raised over $10,000 and ran 177 miles in six days, a feat that required immense preparation and determination. “My initial inspiration was my niece Tammy, who has MS... I thought, I want to use [my ability to run] to do something good for people,” she shares.
Mrs. Gillan’s adventurous spirit led her to Kenya for a field study, combining her love for travel, culture, and research. “I wanted to be able to bring that larger world from personal experience back to my students,” she explains. This experience not only enriched her own life but also brought a unique global perspective to her classroom.
The success of her students in conducting graduate-level research is a testament to her teaching philosophy, which emphasizes critical thinking, curiosity, and resilience. “Science research never goes as planned... it’s ever more important in today’s world to have grit and to be able to pick yourself up and regroup,” Mrs. Gillan emphasizes.
Of course, behind every success story is a cast of supporters who have made great contributions to one’s success. Acknowledging the vital support from her family and community, Mrs. Gillan notes, “My number one fans are my mom and my husband... the support of my family has been huge.” She also credits the collaborative efforts of her colleagues and the broader community for enabling the success of the research program at her school. Gillan is also quick to point out that former Central City High School educator Judy Williams has long served as an inspiration.
Looking forward, Mrs. Gillan aspires to continue growing as an educator and hopes to get a paper published in a peer-reviewed journal. She is also continuing her own education in both the classroom and life. “The key to success is to not be afraid to do scary things... It’s scary to put yourself out there, but that’s how you grow,” she advises, highlighting the importance of embracing challenges.
Mrs. Chelle Gillan stands as a beacon of hope, inspiration, and excellence. Her story, a blend of educational prowess, personal transformation, and community engagement, resonates well beyond the confines of Central City. As we celebrate her as the Person of the Year, we recognize a role model whose impact is profound and far-reaching. Her impact is also not lost on those around her. "Mrs. Gillan has been a dedicated professional that is the epitome of educator success," says Central City Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Jensen. "She has devoted countless hours to student success and her devotion is evident in the performance of her students inside of the classroom and outside of the classroom.  Each year, Mrs. Gillan guides a number of students through an overwhelming number of hours of research to perform at the highest of levels, both regionally and nationally.  Mrs. Gillan has received considerable attention over the past few years including being a finalist for Teacher of the Year in the sciences and receiving this well-earned recognition."
In honoring Mrs. Gillan, we not only applaud her remarkable achievements but also the values she embodies. Her journey is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through dedication, resilience, and a commitment to making a difference.
As we look towards the future, the Central City Republican-Nonpareil is proud to document the continued journey of Mrs. Chelle Gillan. Her legacy in education, community service, and personal empowerment serves as a guiding light, inspiring not just the youth but all of Central City and beyond.
