Van Fasbender represents American Legion Post #6 at 81st session of Cornhusker Boys’ State
The highly anticipated Cornhusker Boys’ State program is back for its 81st session, dedicated to instilling constructive attitudes towards American citizenship among the youth. With the aim of demonstrating the enduring value of democracy, Boys State provides hands-on training in the functional aspects of government, emphasizing the importance of an informed citizenry and an accountable administration.
Each year the American Legion Post #6 makes their selection of one or multiple senior-to-be students to represent them at the annual event. This year Central City High School’s Van Fasbender was bestowed with the great honor and he has spent this week taking in the one-of-a-kind experience.
Originating in Illinois in 1935, Boys State has since been adopted by the National organization of the American Legion and is now operational in 49 states. This year, the program is set to enroll an impressive 20,000 boys, illustrating its significant impact on shaping the next generation of leaders. While the program was reluctantly discontinued during World War II, its revival demonstrates the unwavering commitment to educating young individuals in the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship.
Fundamentally, Boys’ State is a fictional 51st state, where participants construct their own constitution, statutes, and ordinances to govern themselves. The program goes beyond theoretical knowledge by providing practical experiences mirroring real-world governance. Citizens of Boys State establish their own city, county, and state governments, adhere to regulated election procedures to elect officials, learn the duties of various offices, and engage in legislative processes by introducing and debating bills. Law enforcement agencies and courts administer justice, providing an immersive learning environment where each young citizen realizes that the government is a reflection of their own actions. Boys’ State truly embodies the adage “learning by doing.”
Importantly, the entire program is non-partisan and free from any military influence. Participants tackle problems devoid of political party affiliation or propaganda, enabling them to understand the responsibilities they will assume as adults. Notably, the “political parties” in Boys State, known as “Federalists” and “Nationalists,” are fictional and independent of existing political parties in Nebraska, ensuring a neutral and unbiased environment.
Boys’ State offers a well-rounded experience that combines educational and recreational activities. Mornings and early afternoons are dedicated to the educational program, where participants delve into the intricacies of government functioning. During the late afternoon, the boys are encouraged to engage in a diverse range of recreational activities, including sports competitions, band performances, chorus activities, and newsletter contributions. The evenings bring captivating programs that further enrich their experience.
Supervising this transformative program is a team of highly trained and experienced leaders of boys. The administrative officers, counselors, and recreation supervisors possess exemplary qualities and are recognized as responsible figures within their communities. Their guidance ensures a safe and supportive environment for the participants to thrive and learn.
To enhance the educational aspect of Boys State, a distinguished lineup of guest lecturers, comprising outstanding citizens and public servants from Nebraska, will deliver special talks. These lectures will cover topics directly relevant to the program, offering valuable insights and inspiration to the participants.
Cornhusker Boys’ State stands as a beacon of civic education, empowering young individuals to become engaged and responsible citizens. Through its immersive approach, the program equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to navigate the complexities of democratic governance. As the 81st session commences, Nebraska eagerly anticipates the development of another cohort of future leaders who will shape the destiny of the nation.
