Students and Parents take their turn on the special walkway prepared for them as they entered school to start the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.

With all three schools in motion Central City Superintendent Jeff West said “We are prepared and ready to go with the school year and I am looking forward to having a great year. Our staff has done various training over the summer and has many new ideas.”

A Central City Mall employee performed a heroic deed, saving a small child from possible injury. A GMC pickup hit a stop sign then careened across the street and broke through the steel movable barriers into the mall parking lot. It slowed as it hit another truck and at that point Larbarge saw a very small frightened child looking out the window.

Winning one of the coveted five Superior Trophies awarded at the UCA Cheerleader Camp, the Central City squad became eligible for a trip to New York to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

After 35 years of service to the Central City Ambulance Crew, Leroy Kleeve retired recently and he was honored with an open house at City Hall. Kleeve started his job on the ambulance crew in 1957.

Lola Ross was honored at a recent Central City Council meeting for her 10 years of service as a member of the Central City Library Board. Ross was presented with a plaque, commemorating the honor.

This unlucky demolition derby driver can do nothing but watch as another driver lines him up for a clean shot. This action took place at the Merrick County Fair Demolition Derby, which had 42 cars entered.

40 Years Ago

In a closely-contested election, four new directors were selected for three-year terms on the Central City Chamber of Commerce board. Named to fill vacancies on the board were Dick Bauer, Alta Dickinson, Mark Hadenfeldt, and Ward Smith.

Cecile Prud’homme, a 17-year-old French high school student from Meulan, a suburb of Paris, has been spending the month with the John Cruetzberg family in their farm home north of Central City.

Eric Frauen walked away with top honors in the annual 4-H Swine Show at the Merrick County Fair. Eric was named outstanding Swine Exhibitor, Overall Showman, and Champion Senior Showman in the show.

50 Years Ago

Completion of the new football stadium is running nip and tuck with the opening of the 1972-73 football schedule, however Senior High Principal Raymond Hugget predicts all facilities will be ready for use by the opening game.

Roundup club members and families picnicked at Valley View with golf as a preliminary event. Bill Magnusson recorded the best score for the men and Joyce Steckmeyer for the Women.
