Kwik Stop crowned champion in Central City’s Best Burger Battle
What started as a simple question turned into a full-blown community burger brawl—and I’m proud to say we saw it through to the end.
When Waffles N More removed that old “Best Burger in Town” decal from their window, it stirred something in me. A question that’s lingered in the background of many small-town debates suddenly felt urgent again: Who really has the best burger in Central City? And so began the idea to not just find the answer—but to let the people decide.
We created a bracket. We taste-tested each burger, all under the same rules: no toppings, no condiments—just bun and beef. We sampled every option available, then seeded the tournament and opened it up for the town to vote. Each round brought new surprises, heated debates, and a whole lot of community pride. And today, with voting ending right as we go to press, I can share this much: Kwik Stop is your champion.
Yes, you read that right. Kwik Stop—the local gas station that’s served up burgers for years without much fanfare—charged through the field and came away with the title. They took down Rico’s Kitchen in the second round, held off a red-hot Dairy Queen in the Final Four, and squared off against Runza in a championship showdown that saw voters come out in full force. When the smoke cleared, it was Kwik Stop’s no-frills, flavor-forward burger that stood above the rest.
But let’s not forget the journey it took to get here. Dairy Queen opened things up with a win over Pump & Pantry before besting Prairie Creek. Rico’s earned a win over Casey’s. Runza handled business against Merrick Medical Center and then battled past KennaBell’s BBQ. And Lincoln Manor gave us the Cinderella story of the tournament— knocking out El Agave and nearly shocking the Independent Club before falling just short.
We’ll have more coverage soon on Kwik Stop’s burger and their well-earned bragging rights, but above all, I hope this tournament made people realize something: we are blessed with some truly great burger options right here in Central City, Nebraska. From restaurants to gas stations, from comfort food to creative flair, there’s something for every kind of burger lover in this town.
What began with a missing sign turned into something fun, silly, and unexpectedly competitive. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. See you next year, maybe. I’ve got a few more burgers to finish first.
