Summer is officially upon us as the days have grown in length and the temperature is on the rise. With it some big traditions are back once again as we look forward to Lone Tree Days and the Merrick County Fair. Before that we will see, and hear, the signs that Independence Day is just around the corner.

Firework sales as slatted to begin this upcoming week and the Central City Police Department reminds residents of the rules and regulations surrounding discharge hours.

Ordinance 7-502 states that it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to discharge any form of fireworks, except between the hours of 8:00 am and 10:00 pm beginning on June 25 and ending on July 2 of each year, and except between the hours of 8:00 am and midnight on July 3 and 4 of each year. If any of the dates beginning June 25 and ending July 4 fall on a Sunday, permitted fireworks may be discharged only after noon on that day.

The ordinance highlights that the first fireworks for 2023 can be legally discharged beginning on Sunday at 12:01 pm. This year also marks the first year that fireworks will be able to be discharged until midnight on July 3, in addition to the July 4, holiday.

Residents are also reminded of a few important safety reminders to stay safe this summer.

Know the Laws and Regulations: Before even considering setting off fireworks, familiarize yourself with the laws and regulations in your area. Firework laws vary by country, state, and city, and it’s crucial to abide by them to avoid legal trouble or fines. Research local ordinances, permit requirements, and designated firework zones to ensure compliance and prevent any unwanted incidents.

Purchase Fireworks from Reliable Sources: Always purchase fireworks from reputable and licensed vendors. Avoid buying them from unknown or unauthorized sellers, as these products may be substandard or unsafe. Reliable sources ensure that the fireworks meet safety standards, reducing the risk of malfunction or accidents during ignition.

Read and Follow Instructions: Carefully read the instructions and labels provided with the fireworks. Each firework type has specific guidelines for usage, safety distances, and recommended lighting procedures. Following these instructions diligently is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Choose an Appropriate Setting: Select an open and outdoor space for setting off fireworks.

Ensure the area is clear of any flammable materials, dry foliage, or other potential fire hazards. Consider wind direction, nearby buildings, and the proximity of spectators, keeping a safe distance as recommended by the instructions.

Keep Safety Equipment Handy: Always have safety equipment on hand, including a fire extinguisher, water buckets, and a first aid kit. These items can help you address any emergencies quickly and effectively, minimizing the potential damage or injuries caused by accidental fires or burns.

Alcohol and Fireworks Don’t Mix: Avoid consuming alcohol or any other substances that impair judgment while handling fireworks. Impaired coordination and decision-making increase the risk of accidents and can turn a festive occasion into a hazardous one. Stay clear-headed and ensure responsible adults supervise the entire firework display.

Children and Firework Safety: Children should never handle fireworks without adult supervision. Even sparklers, which may seem harmless, can cause severe burns if mishandled. Educate children about the potential dangers of fireworks and enforce strict rules to ensure their safety. Instead, consider providing alternative, age-appropriate activities such as glow sticks or supervised sparkler use.

Light Fireworks Properly: When igniting fireworks, follow the recommended lighting procedures. Use a long, extended lighter or an extended fuse to maintain a safe distance from the firework. Once lit, immediately move away to a safe distance to prevent injuries from sparks or unexpected explosions.

Dispose of Fireworks Safely: After the fireworks display, douse used fireworks in water before disposing of them properly. Completely soak them to ensure they are fully extinguished. This step reduces the risk of accidental fires caused by smoldering fireworks and helps maintain a clean and safe environment.
