Central City High’s Akeyli Bush leads groundbreaking soil health research
In the heart of the science labs of Central City High School, a young scientist is rewriting the narrative of agricultural science. Akeyli Bush, a senior at Central City High School, is not just another student; she is a pioneer, a young woman on a mission to uncover the secrets of soil health and its profound impact on sustainable agriculture. Her journey, fueled by passion, intellect, and relentless determination, is not just her story. It’s a story that resonates with every individual who believes in the power of science to change the world.
Akeyli’s research, a deep dive into the health of soil under varying land management techniques, is research that could have great real-world effect. “I am studying soil health for three different land management techniques — cover crop, perennial cover, and no cover crop,” Akeyli explains. Her focus?
To meticulously analyze soil aggregates, water infiltration rates, and metagenomics, the complex world of fungal and bacterial communities that lay hidden beneath our feet.
Achieving a scientific breakthrough is no small feat, especially when it comes to funding. Akeyli’s tenacity in securing funding for her research is nothing short of remarkable. With a total of $885 raised through the Central City FFA Alumni, Archer Credit Union, and the Dan Gillespie Soil Health Fund, she has laid a solid foundation for her ambitious project. “This only happened because of a great deal of work on her part,” Mrs. Chelle Gillan notes.
Collaboration is at the core of Akeyli’s research. Mrs. Chelle Gillan, Central City High School Science Instructor, can’t help but admire Akeyli’s collaborative spirit. “She has worked with multiple professionals in the soil conservation and agricultural fields,” Mrs. Gillan says. Akeyli’s ability to network and communicate with experts has not only enriched her research but also positioned her as a notable figure in conservation circles.
Akeyli’s project is a meticulous undertaking. It involves collecting soil samples, running water infiltration tests, aggregate stability tests, and microbial community analysis. “I send in the samples for microbial testing, but I do all the aggregate and water infiltration tests by hand,” she explains. This hands-on approach underscores her dedication to understanding every nuance of her research.
The scientific research class at Central City High has been instrumental in Akeyli’s growth. “This is not an easy class to take and requires a lot of time and effort,” Akeyli reflects. Her time spent working with Mrs. Gillan over the summer, planning and executing her research, has not just enhanced her scientific acumen but also her personal development.
One of the most valuable aspects of Akeyli’s journey has been the connections she’s forged. “Students in the research class reach out to professionals in the field they are studying,” Akeyli points out. These professionals often become mentors, offering guidance and opening doors to opportunities like attending the Soil Water Conservation Services annual conference, where Akeyli spent three days presenting her research.
Akeyli’s research isn’t a solitary endeavor. She has worked with multiple professionals in soil conservation and agriculture, gaining invaluable insights and perspectives. Her collaboration with experts like Lance Gunderson of Regen Ag Lab, Jacob Kendrick of the USDA- NRCS, and Laura Rubeck of the USDA-NRCS is a shining example of how academic pursuits can bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.
Akeyli’s story is a rallying call to her peers. She encourages students to join the research program, highlighting the myriad opportunities it offers. Her success at the National FFA and other science fairs is a testament to the program’s efficacy and Mrs. Gillan’s mentorship. “Mrs. Gillan is an incredible teacher, very knowledgeable and dedicated,” Akeyli says with admiration.
Akeyli Bush is more than just a student; she is a visionary, a young scientist poised to make significant contributions to soil conservation and sustainable agriculture. Her journey at Central City High School is a beacon of inspiration, showcasing the incredible potential of young minds when supported by dedicated educators and a nurturing environment. As Akeyli continues her quest, she not only carries the hope for a sustainable agricultural future but also stands as a symbol of what passion, perseverance, and collaboration can achieve in the world of science.
