Gov. Dave Heineman today announced his appointment of Stephen R. W. Twiss of Central City to the County Court, 5th Judicial District.
Twiss, 44, is an attorney at Sampson, Curry & Twiss, P.C. where his practice is focused in the areas of estate planning, probate, trust administration, real estate transactions, business entities, civil litigation and criminal litigation. Twiss served as the part-time Deputy Merrick County Attorney for fourteen years, handling the majority of the County Court and Juvenile Court prosecution responsibilities. He served as the interim Boone County Attorney for two months in 2009. During his years as a prosecutor, Twiss was appointed Special Prosecutor by County and District Judges in several area counties including Boone, Hamilton, Nance and Polk.
“I am truly honored by the appointment and by the confidence the Governor has placed in me,” says Twiss. “I am also very thankful and humbled by the support that I have received from my family, friends, and members of the community. I look forward to serving the citizens of the Fifth Judicial District as a County Court Judge.”
Twiss, who received news of his appointment by a personal Tuesday evening phone call from the governor, will have his office in Central City and will take the next 30 to 60 days to “wrap things up” before assuming his position on the bench. His start date as district judge will be announced in the very near future.
Twiss has been a volunteer Hunter Education Instructor for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission since 1998. In addition, he serves as an adult committee Member of Central City Cub Scout Pack 102 and serves on the Litzenberg Health Care Foundation Board of Directors.
The 5th Judicial District consists of Boone, Butler, Colfax, Hamilton, Merrick, Nance, Platte, Polk, Saunders, Seward and York Counties. The vacancy is due to the retirement of Judge Curtis H. Evans.
