Even as a young child, my siblings and I never had a special space where a parent would periodically back us up against a tall surface and carve a notch or draw a line with a Sharpie to mark the extent to which we had grown during the year.

There was no permanently scarred cranny—or nook, for that matter—at our home, where the family record of height, and therefore of growth and development and education level and all the rest, was recorded for all posterity.

And my wife and I have continued the habit of not doing so.
