Central City, Merrick County had roles in establishing Lincoln Highway

In its long history, Central City, Nebraska has probably never been in the national spotlight more than it was on May 8, 1913.

It was on that day a national level meeting was held in Central City, the outshoot of a drive to have the Lincoln Highway, later to be named U.S. Highway 30, routed through the Platte Valley, including Central City.

One hundred years later, after the completed highway has taken its place as among the most famous, and critical, in the nation’s history, a celebration of the Lincoln Highway is planned for Kearney June 30 and July 1. Thousands of enthusiasts are expected to attend the celebration, which will include a parade at 12:45 on July 1.
