One of the glaring social problems talked about through much of 2017—and across much of the nation during that time—was what various state legislatures, law enforcement authorities, and health care professionals described as an epidemic of illegal opioid use.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, in statistics updated just this month, reports that every day sees 115 Americans die by overdosing on opioid drugs.
